In years gone by Lanikai was without peer. Eventually the word got out and Lanikai was featured prominently in many publications (including TV). Unfortunately this turned a once quiet and peaceful beach into a popular excursion for visitors from other parts of the island. The mile long beach has also lost a lot of its precious sand to erosion in recent years and is nearly half the size it once was. Unlike Kailua Beach just to the north along the coast, these waters tend to be much more sedate and accommodate swimmers, snorkelers, and beginning divers perfectly. Lanikai Beach Hawaii is also a favorite vacation destination for families with children, as the waters are calm. It should, however, be noted that there are no lifeguards on duty at this beach that is nestled in a residential area.
Lanikai Beach is a half-mile long beach that is relatively empty almost all of the time throughout the week. It does get crowded during the peak season winter months (generally on the weekends). Because of the fact that Lanikai Beach is situated in a residential part of Oahu, the beach is only accessible via several public points of entry that are easy to find from Mokulua Drive. For people staying anywhere near this part of the eastern coast of Oahu, Lanakai Beach is a fantastic place to escape for relaxing and tranquil day during the week, especially if you are staying in busier areas to the north closer to the Kailua Beach Park. Although there are no accommodations located right on the beach or within immediate proximity of it, you will find that there are a number of options nearby, including a selection of hotels and a host of vacation rental homes. There is also a selection of eateries dispersed along this picturesque stretch of coastline, but none on the beach.
There are several distinctive characteristics of this beach that add to its allure and its raw natural beauty. First and foremost, an offshore reef provides protection for the water, making this an absolutely ideal place for snorkeling and swimming. Families with small kids staying anywhere near Kailua Bay might consider this destination, as the conditions could not be much better for the youngsters. Even though there are no lifeguards on duty, this remains a safe place to take the kids. Secondly, the presence of two offshore, island bird sanctuaries (known as the Mokuluas) gives advanced swimmers and ambitious snorkelers the chance to explore the islands and the surrounding reefs.
This is an area where people of all ages will relish the opportunity to see a wide variety of tropical and exotic marine life and birds. The raw natural beauty of the beach, the calm waters, and the vividly colored reef make up for the fact that there are no public facilities here. In fact, a lot of people prefer it this way. You do not have to travel far to find gear and equipment rentals or accommodations, but you can rest assured that you will leave Lanikai Beach feeling relaxed.
If you’re not keen on snorkeling or swimming out to the islands (which is no small challenge if you are not a practiced swimmer) you can always take a kayak out to the islands to survey the bird sanctuaries. Be sure to bring your camera or camcorder to Lanikai, as this is one place in Hawaii that you are not going to want to forget.
